  Four Carnot Institutes led by INRA were accredited in 2016

The successes of the third and highly competitive call for “Carnot Institute” projects deserve a special issue of INRA's Newsletter for Industry.

In 2011, INRA took the initiative to work in association with several partners in order to propose their combined skills to industry in the context of three integrated, structured and accredited projects, or Carnot Institutes: 3BCAR, on bioenergies, biomolecules and biomaterials from renewable carbon; ICSA, focused on animal health and diet, and Qualiment dealing with human foods and nutrition.

Boosted by the successes recorded in terms of the R&D projects completed with different companies, these three Institutes responded to the “Carnot 3” call for projects in 2015. Their efforts with respect to structuring and working on their new scope in order to respond increasingly efficiently to the questions posed by industry were crowned with success because the three new projects were accredited in July 2016. The fourth project submitted was also accredited: Plant2Pro aims to achieve a systemic and sustainable vision of arable crops and vines.

This special issue, which presents a summary of these devices for the structuring of public research, offers an overview of the three projects that have been renewed; each has chosen to focus on a particular highlight to illustrate their past successes. We also present the main features of most recent member of this community, Plant2Pro.

The editorial to the January 2016 Newsletter described the aims of INRA's new Director of Partnerships, Philippe Lénée, as being to “promote visibility and dialogue with stakeholders and key actors in innovation”.  The important successes we present here demonstrate the partnership policy adopted by INRA, of which the Carnot Institutes form the cornerstone.

EnobraQ: A start-up resulting from TWB to capture and exploit man-made CO2

EnobraQ is developing a biological process for the capture of CO2 by yeasts so as to enable the production of chemical compounds. The design of a synthetic yeast that can use CO2 in the same way as plants or micro-algae constitutes an important breakthrough innovation with enormous industrial potential.

France Futur Élevage: a Carnot Institute for multi-performance livestock farming

The new Carnot Institute, France Futur Élevage (i.e. France Livestock Industry for the Future), can offer companies in the livestock sector its skills in R&D that mobilise three essential levers for efficient, sustainable and profitable livestock farming: health, feed and livestock systems, and animal genetics. It includes three technical institutes and thus proposes a broadened range of skills.
