The MIA-Jouy Research Unit

The  Applied Mathematics and Informatics (Mathématiques et Informatique Appliquées or MIA) research unit is part of the French National Institute for Agricultural Research  (INRA). It is one the unit of the department MIA and is located in the center of Jouy-en-Josas.

Researches in MIA unit are devoted to applied mathematics (statistics, dynamical systems, stochastic processes, image analysis). They concern:

  • data processing, spatio-temporal analysis and modeling of biological systems (AnIMod team)
  • modelling and analysis of dynamical phenomena met in agro-ecology, epidemiology (DynEnVie team)
  • analysis of huge sets of data and complex models in biology (MegaDim team)

The data analysed are very diverse: georeferenced data, enquiry databases, genomic or proteomic databases, time series, digital images in microscopy...

Main research topics :
     Selection of models, branching processes, semi-Markovian processes , high dimensional statistics, design of real and computer experiments, analysis of censored data, filtering and image segmentation, dynamical systems, sensitivity analysis, modelling of spatio-temporal systems.

Main applications:
- the modelling and risk assessment in animal and plant epidemiology;
- the quantitative evaluation of the risk on the whole food chain;
- the detection of GMO in food;
- the modeling of gene diffusion in the environnement;
- the analysis of data of expression in molecular biology;
- the quantitative analysis of dynamics in cellular biology;
- the morphological characterization of tissues in plants.

Partners include:
- French public research institutes such as  ANSES, CNRS, INSERM, INRIA;
- Universities (Paris XI, Paris V);
- INRA research units in its MIA research department and in other ones, in the field of animal health, microbiology and environnement.
It takes part in various national and European projects and networks.
