The authorisation to carry out experiments on animals is granted together with the obligation to observe European regulations on animal welfare. Alternative methods are used when they exist.

Animal biology research aims to better understand how organisms work and their environment’s influence. Research at the Jouy-en-Josas Research Centre concerns the relationships between food and nutrition, genetics and health. Our teams have developed original animal models in order to study diseases such as skin cancer, atherosclerosis, myopathies, encephalopathies, parasitic diseases. Some projects are conducted jointly with biomedical teams.

Our experimental research units and facilities have been designed for studying mammals, particularly livestock, and also fish in specific conditions. The staff has skills and training that are essential for the rearing and wellfare of experimental animals. Collaborating through our experimental research units allows access to imaging and integrative biology equipment available at the Research Centre.
Animal experimentation units are as follows:
• Central Experimentation Unit for Livestock (cattle, goats, sheep, pigs): access to descriptive fact sheets (UCEA)
• Rodent Rearing Unit (UEAR)
• Fish Rearing Unit (UEP)
• Experimental Feeds Preparation Unit (UPAE)
• The breeding facilities for germfree rodents of the Unit of Ecology and Physiology of the Digestive Tract (UEPSD)

(Access to descriptive fact sheets in the left-hand margin)
